GENERAL SKILLED MIGRATION
The General Skilled Migration program is for skilled individuals or families looking to permanently migrate to Australia, to fill Australia’s skill shortages. Visas within the General Skilled Migration program are points tested and are either independent, State / Territory sponsored or family-sponsored permanent visas.
The Skilled Occupation List determines which occupations are eligible to apply for permanent residency through the General Skilled Migration program.
Applicants are assessed against the point’s test in which points can be claimed in the different areas like, Age, English, Education, Work Experience, Specialist qualifications, CCL, Spouse Skills, Professional year in Australia
Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)
This is a point-tested permanent visa for skilled worker who have received a nomination by a state or territory government. You must be nominated by an Australian State or Territory. Please note, each State and Territory Government have their own list of eligible occupations and may have specific nomination criteria and requirements
Eligibility criteria
At The Time Of Invitation You Must
- Be under 45 years of age.
- Have your nominated occupation on the relevant medium and long Term Strategic Skilled List (MLTSSL).
- Have positive and valid skill assessment from the relevant skills assessing authority in relation to your nominated occupation.
- Be able to obtain minimum score on point test to apply for the visa.
- Unless Exempt, have at least Competent English (6 minimum in IELTS on each band or equivalent)
- Meet the health and character requirements.
- Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect and be invited to apply.
Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)
This is a point-tested permanent visa for skilled worker who have received a nomination by a state or territory government. You must be nominated by an Australian State or Territory. Please note, each State and Territory Government have their own list of eligible occupations and may have specific nomination criteria and requirements
Eligibility criteria
At The Time Of Invitation You Must
- Be under 45 years of age.
- Have your nominated occupation on the relevant state or territory skilled occupation list.
- Have positive and valid skill assessment from the relevant skills assessing authority in relation to your nominated occupation.
- Be able to obtain minimum score on point test to apply for the visa. Currently it is 65
- Unless Exempt, have at least Competent English (6 minimum in IELTS on each band or equivalent)
- Meet the health and character requirements.
- Be nominated by an Australian State or Territory Government
- Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect and be invited to apply from any Australian state or territory government.
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Subclass 491 Visa
For this visa you will need to be nominated by either a designated regional area of Australian state or territory government, or need to be sponsored by eligible family member residing in a designated regional area.
Please note, each State and Territory Government have their own list of eligible occupations and may have specific nomination criteria and requirements
This visa holder can
- Stay up to 5 years in designated regional area of Australia
- Apply for permanent residence (subclass 191) after 3 years from the time your visa is granted, If eligible
- Live, work and study only in designated regional areas of Australia
- Access Medicare
- Cannot apply for any other skilled visa or 820 partner visas for 3 years

- For family sponsored applicants, this is the Medium-Long Term Skills Shortage List (MLTSSL)
- For State/Territory nominated applicants, this is the MLTSSL, the Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) and the Regional Occupation List (ROL) and a State/Territory Occupations List
- Have positive and valid skill assessment from the relevant skills assessing authority in relation to your nominated occupation.
- Be able to obtain minimum score on point test to apply for the visa.
- Unless Exempt, have at least Competent English (6 minimum in IELTS on each band or equivalent)
- Meet the health and character requirements.
- Be nominated by a designated regional area of Australian State or Territory government or sponsored by an eligible family member residing living in designated regional area.
- Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect and be invited to apply from any designated regional area of Australian state or territory government.
