Parent Visa

Parent visas generally, allow parents of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who is “settled” in Australia to live either temporarily or permanently in Australia.
Parents must be sponsored by one of their children who is “settled” in Australia. This means they have lived lawfully in Australia for the two years immediately before the application is lodged
Parents must meet the “balance of family” test.

Australia has a range of parent visas which allows eligible parents of Australian citizens and permanent residents to move to Australia and live permanently with their children.

Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 870)

  • can visit Australia temporarily for up to 3 or 5 years per visa.
  • can apply for further visas to visit up to a maximum period in Australia of 10 years.
  • cannot work in Australia.
  • does not require to meet balance of family test or Assurance of Support requirements.
  • Cannot apply for a permanent or temporary parent visa when you have applied for or hold this visa.

You must be outside Australia when you apply for this visa, unless you have Permission to Apply in Australia, but not in immigration clearance. You can be in or outside Australia, but not in immigration clearance , at the time of decision. be the biological, adoptive, step-parent or parent in-law of the Parent Sponsor. be at least 18 years of age. have an approved Parent Sponsor. lodge your visa application within 6 months of the sponsorship approval, or 60 days if you are given Permission to Apply in Australia. must meet health and character requirements. have, or have access to, enough money to support yourself while you are in Australia. have a genuine intention to stay in Australia temporarily. have and maintain adequate arrangements for health insurance whist in Australia.

Cost

This visa costs

  • AUD 5090 for a visa of up to 3 years; or
  • AUD 10180 for a visa of up to 5 years.

You can pay for this visa in 2 instalments.

Pay the first instalment ($1020) when you apply.

Pay the second instalment ($4070 for 3 years or $9160 for 5 years) when department ask

Parent & contributory parent visa options

There are several different visa options that may lead to Australian permanent residency.

There are currently six classes of Parent visas which fall into two major categories – non-contributory and contributory. They may also be classified on the basis of an applicant’s age; and temporary and permanent residence.

Can apply onshore, but NO bridging visa is granted

  • Parent Visa (subclass 103)
  • Contributory Parent Visa (subclass 143)
  • Contributory Parent Temporary Visa (subclass 173) to Contributory Parent Visa (subclass 143)

Can apply onshore and be granted a bridging visa

  • Aged Parent Visa (subclass 804)
  • Contributory Aged Parent Visa (subclass 864)
  • Contributory Aged Parent Temporary Visa (subclass 884) to Contributory Aged Parent Visa (subclass 864)

General Eligibility for all parent visa options (SC 103, 143, 804 & 864)

  • You must have an eligible child who is a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen. Settled means they have lived lawfully in Australia for the two years immediately before the application is lodged
  • You must not have already applied for or hold a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (Subclass 870) visa when applying for this visa
  • You must meet the balance of family test.
  • At least half of your children live permanently in Australia, or
  • More of your children live permanently in Australia than in any other country
  • You must be able to obtain an assurance of support (not require for subclass 173 & 884)

An assurance of support assures us that you will not have to rely on government assistance after you enter Australia on this visa. The assurance is for you and any family members who come to Australia with you on this visa.

  • Meet health and character requirements

For Aged Parent visa (SC 804 & 864)

  • be old enough to receive the age pension in Australia. The main applicant of this visa must be 66 and a half years of age or older, however, if they have a partner aged younger than this, they can be included as a secondary applicant.

For Contributory -Parent visa (SC 143) & Aged Parent Visa (SC 864)

  • This visa costs from AUD 47,825. There is an additional charge for each family member who applies with you.

It is known as a temporary visa because it enables successful applicants to live in Australia for up to two years and then apply for the contributory parent visa (SC 143) during this two year period. SC 173 visa period starts on the date you enter Australia after you are granted the visa. You can’t stay in Australia longer by extending or reapplying for this visa. You can apply for a different visa. During two years you can apply for the contributory parent visa (SC 143) This visa costs from AUD 31,980. There is an additional charge for each family member who applies with you. Cost can be spread as $31,980 is payable just before grant of the 173 visa, with a second fee of $19,420 payable prior to the 143 being granted in the future
